Is there a secret for project success?

IT projects are not significantly different from projects in other industries. Success is mainly dependent on people who are able to anticipate the effects and consequences of certain decisions. The key components are bringing in specialist know-how only when it is truly needed, defining clear arbitration rules to avoid and resolve conflicts and benefitting from experience of professionals whose job is to make projects work.

Project Quality Review

Regular project reviews are key to getting successful results. Those audits need to be done by independent people like you get your technical inspection done by an external and independent expert engineer. Only the external experienced experts are able to see the weaknesses and can demonstrate how your project and practice deviates from common behaviour.

Project Attendance and Monitoring

Most IT teams have never done larger and mission critical IT change projects like the Greenfield introduction or migration of an ERP system to SAP, Oracle, Dynamics or alike. This is also true for most of the IT consultancies, no matter how many certified consultants they may have. It is hence crucial to bring in some independent business process experts who are specialized in supervising project and anticipating the places where the project may break. This concept is well known in civil engineering, manufacturing and other engineering areas where you always have an external architect to monitor the work of the project crew.

Project Mediation and Arbitration

However, the project architect is not meant to control the work to blame them but the duty is to assist with superior expert advice. In addition the architect will be the independent umpire to discuss contending proposals and strategies and eventually decide which way to go in accord with all team members. Such a person is mandatory if the project team is an external subcontracted consultancy.

Project Rescue

There are sometimes the moment when the house is already in fire. In these cases you need the experienced firemen who both understand to bring the immediate fire down and to build the right path to get the construction working and stable. Project rescue is an art mastered by a small number of IT experts in the world that requires the ability to act both farsighted and rapidly with a personality that is immune against stress.
